Motor vehicle prices

Morning all

With our friends having now bought in Tala and ourselves agreeing our early retirement dates with our employers we are stepping up our research relating to our move to the island
I have been browsing various sites trying to get an idea of car prices and it seems like for like second hand cars on the island are a lot more expensive than in the UK
I found a 1.4 VW Golf 2010 ,and the vendor was asking €11000 . The same vehicle here would be around £7000
Is this general ? As if it is , it certainly changes the equation when considering shipping my own low mileage Golf out when we come out

Has anyone bought new on the island and if so what was the difference in price between the UK and Cyprus?

Your correct about used car prices even if you remember we pay in euro's, allso used car prices hold their value here, usually you do not lose out on the deal apart from the usual depreciation, also parts can be a problem here especially with motors that are a little unusual and obscure manufacturing, best to see what is selling well here and maybe import the car, personally I would not do this, but over the years I know members who have, you take your choice of course..as local VW owner..and Honda.(small cars are my preference, cheap to run here usually)

I recently bought a new Toyota Yaris 1300cc for €15,000 which at the time was about £11,300 from the local Toyota Dealer in Paphos. I'm looking for a 2 year old 2 litre car in the UK at the moment as I can get a good quality second hand model for substantially less than I would pay in Cyprus and that is after paying for the import and shipping costs. I personally think that's the way to go.

Import taxes are pretty reasonable these days and are dependent on C02 Emissions as opposed to engine size. I remember bringing a 2.5 litre in to Cyprus in 2003 and they wanted 11500 Cypriot Pounds, now it would be around 2,000 Euro's.

If our plans come to fruition I suspect the way to go will be a new one such as Fiesta or Polo sort of vehicle
I can leave our Golf here and use it when we return to the UK from time to time

One final question are there Ford and VW main dealers in Paphos or would I have to go to Nicosia or Limmassol?

Unicars is the VW dealer in Paphos I think. Ford here too.

I own a Suzuki Swift in the UK and for a small car I can thoroughly recommend it. It also scores very high on reliabilty, even on 2nd hand ones. They are more expensive in Cyprus. You can get a new 5 door for £9.500 in the UK.

Yep Swift Gti would be right up my street but the Paphos roads certainly are not the best surfaces for such a firm suspension
Pretty rubbish in the Uk as well which is why I didn't go for a Gti Golf here

No Swift GTI for me either, just a 1.2. There is a garage on the road up from the New Mall going towards the Market in Paphos which seems to sell Swifts.

As McIngy has said, 2nd hand cars are more expensive than UK here most of the time. We war through the same debate as you and sold our car in the UK before conning here and bought a new one, a Nissan Qashqai, over here which proved to to be way cheaper than buying the equivalent vehicle in the UK and bringing it here. CO2 emissions are the key now for excise duty calculation and annual road tax. Used to be based on cc which in some cases means newer bigger engines are now cheaper than older less efficient engine. The omnipresent Honda HRV is a good example, as a 1600 used to be dead cheap to bring over, now as high Co2 it costs a fortune.

Had loads of Swifts as hire cars here before moving over, a bit gutless (as autos) and struggle on some of the longer climbs. There is a small suzuki dealer on the road from the Police station to the Debenhams / Super Home Centre roundabout. For a similar size, the Nissan Note & Juke both seem to be increasingly popular.

we are looking at purchasing a new car at the moment, the new Ford Ecosport took our eye, the basic model is 14900 euro, the starting price in the uk shows as £14775? read the reviews for it and it gets a real battering, so decided to look elsewhere.
JUst returned from Nicosia where we were looking at the new Nissan Juke, it has a new 1.2 supercharged engine so low tax etc, got loads of extras and 1300 euro discount for not trading another car in, so we managed to go up a model with metallic paint included for the price of the mid price model, 16000 euros otr, quite good i thought when i saw a 2012 model for just short of 13000

I have a Nissan note, bought 2nd hand, which I have had for 2 yrs. To date it has been very reliable transport. It is just under 1400cc and attracts a €55 rate for road tax. Personally, I wouldn't buy a car with a smaller engine. They are fine on the flat, but are gutless on long hill climbs which are a feature on some of the roads leaving Paphos for Polis, the Akamas or Troodos areas.

Well the wife has just purchased from our usual Cypriot dealer a fantastic pre-owned VW Polo TSi, it has a small engine at 1.2 but is turbocharged, I can say it will be faster than most cars in the 1.5Ltr range and even more powerful than some larger engines, it is small her last motor was a Suzuki Splash so headroom could be a problem for some, but the VW is so well made and put together it shames some other manufacturers, 60mpg easy to park, to sum up very fast and very frugal also great breaking as it has disc's all round, the wife loves the car, petrol VW's do have a premium secondhand price though.
