How to Stop Cats Clawing Soft Top

I hope no-one objects, I posted this query in General Discussion, but it seemed to reawaken old disagreements. I don't care about anything the local cats do apart from damaging my car, so here's my query, probably better suited to the Motoring Section.

Having gone to considerable expense to import my beloved soft top car to Cyprus, complete with an expensive tailor made cover, I'm really cross to find that after only a few days the local cats have ripped the cover. It's only a matter of time before they get to the soft top with their evil claws.

I don't mind cats, I don't want to hurt them, or exclude them from anywhere other than my lovely car on our driveway.

I'm racking my brain to think of ways to protect my lovely car!

I can't stand next to it 24/7 with my water pistol so, I've bought an additional cover, put camping sleep mats under the covers (to protect the soft top) and am thinking of buying a sonic repeller.

Can any kind CL members make any other suggestions? Especially as it will be parked up for the winter while I'm back in the UK.

Something that makes a noise may help to keep them away.... our cats didn't really like the sound of tinfoil. However, cats do often like to crawl inside plastic bags so a plastic cover may not be the way to go.

They do say cat's stay away from a plastic bottle filled with water, if left lying in the garden (something to do with reflections but not sure how true it is). You could experiment by putting a couple on the roof when you leave it overnight and see if it works. At least it won't cost anything!
