unleaded in a diesel car

Postby Drambuie » 29 Oct 2016 12:11

I have plenty of excuses but in a nutshell this idiot put unleaded in his diesel car.

Now faced with the car needing a flatbed collection from Coral Bay to a reputable mechanic.

The petrol station would have emptied the tank but tell me that as the car is a 2015 Nissan Qashqai auto model with electric pump and plastic? pipes they don't want to risk any damage.

I can arrange a flatbed collection but wonder if there are any recommendations for who to do the work.

I think that's the BMW service dept. Quite a distance from Coral Bay.

As it must be a common enough occurrence I was thinking probably plenty of professional mechanics closer and more reasonably priced.

Sorry but I'd have thought the quality of the service would've been paramount in case any repairs done by anyone other than the main dealer would invalidate the warranty.

I have registered your concerns however, the engine was not run as I realised my error therefore no damage. Simply needs the fuel drained and replaced.

Try phoning your insurance company usually they provide a breakdown service; in fact the number to call should be in your Insurance package. I have had my old truck collected from several locations over the years, even off the drive of our house and all for free. The garage we use is up by One Stop, as you turn into the road off the Polis Road where One Stop have their Yard the garage is on the left.

we have a quashquai under warranty. i think you will find that no matter how small the main dealers expect you to take it there or invalidate the warranty. we had a small problem about 18 months ago but still had to take it to BMW.

Thanks Darrow. I did actually look for the BMW service centre a few months ago while up that way, couldn't see it but had other things to do.

What are your thoughts regarding their workshops etc. My reason for asking is that another main dealer were very poor compared to others.

I did the same some years ago at a self service station, put 50 litres of Civgas into my 70 litre Diesel truck. Ran very, very rough for a week or so. Had to rev like mad to pull away but once going it burbled along no problem. I gradually corrected the mix by topping up with 10 litres when necessary. No evident long term harm - diesels can run on just about any fuel so they say.

I might be tempted to do the same Bromerzz had it been a truck but mine has only 5k on the clock so would be an expensive engine change if I ended up damaging it.
I would imagine there are countless others who have done the same. While concentrating on other things. Fortunately I realised before filling the tank completely so we are talking about 17 litres which still amounts to 30%. Apparently anything over 10% is a problem. I shall have it drained etc for safety. Thanks for your interesting response.

I was in a Ford Dealers in Liverpool and a lady had just picked up her brand new Ford Fiesta, she only drove it across the forecourt and filled it to the brim with Diesel, unfortunately it was a petrol engine. The car didn't even have a mile on the clock; as soon as she realised what she had done she just burst into tears; I felt so sorry for her. I believe the nozzles are different sizes these days.

Yes diesel nozzle is larger than unleaded. Unfortunately for me it's possible to use the narrow unleaded nozzle in a diesel tank :(
