automatic help.

Postby geoffm » 01 Nov 2016 08:12

Does anyone know or have contact with an auto specialist, I have an auto box that needs looking at, but I don't want to be told "you need a new box for €1000" .
My box seems to miss 2nd but other than that it drives OK.

Has the car ever had the gearbox oil/fluid changed?
Just like engine oil this needs to be done but not as often, some people tend to forget and it is neglected. When problems arise it usually just needs that doing and maybe the filter (if it has one) replacing.
If the oil/fluid has been changed though, it could be something more serious.

Yes it's had two oil changes but I think the problem started by being topped up with the wrong fluid, has now got the correct fluid but when you kick down or pull back into 2nd it ether goes down into 1st or freewheels(not sure which) had last oil change and filters/solenoids cleaned done by Criss Cool (€300) he told me box is working like new but it isn't at all,I've got 1st and (what appears to be) 3rd, wouldn't go back there.
It is driveable but not as it should be, been to two places that just want to change the box for a breakers box(€700 ish) plus €300 to fit it...ya right.
Trying to find a mechanic that knows what goes on inside an auto here is difficult .

Hi Geoff
When we got our CRV I joined the CRV owners club via the internet.
Most of the members are from North America, and with the USA having automatic cars for donkeys years, have a lot more experience with them than us Europeans.
They are all adamant that even with all the auto box fluid on their market, that you only use Honda Auto Transmission fluid or you will be asking for trouble.
I dont know what model etc you have but it could be the same case with your car.
I do know that if the gears are slipping the solution is to change all the fluid to the correct type according to your manufacturer and hope that this will solve the problem.
Good luck
