WiFi amplifier

Postby megalos christakis » 26 Jan 2016 14:06

The apartments where we are staying this year (arriving end of April for 6 weeks) have WiFi but it has been suggested that the apartment we will have is a bit weak for the WiFi.

Being a non-Techy I am hoping someone "in theatre" can give me the right advice.

Is the system the same as in UK? In other words, will UK-Spec stuff work in Cyprus.
Would a simple USB Dongle do the trick?
Would I be better getting an amplifier which plugs into the circuit where the router is and also in the apartment (assuming they are on the same circuit) work if it is UK-Spec?

One of the attractions of where we are staying this year is that wifi is available, hopefully without having to go down to the bar area every time we want to go online, also the fact that we will be 30m from the sea with a view of the sunset to die for.

I would be grateful for any tips. Having visited the island at least once a year for the past 21 years I should know the answers myself but must confess to being something of a Luddite.

UK Spec = Normal Spec = World spec ... there are some issues with channels & voltages sometimes, but UK gear in Cyprus works, however, what exactly do you have in mind ?

If the signal is weak, the signal is weak ! Not much you can do on your own to improve that, even a more sensitive aerial isn't going to improve things that much.

From the apartment management side of things there are options such as WiFi Mesh or even simple repeaters or as you state ethernet-over-power extenders, all of which enhance the reach of their WiFi network, but this would involve using network and/or power which both of which are normally out of reach to visiting clients. If the owners agree to your access, then Ethernet-over-power may work for you, but must be on same phase, and further distance, lower signal quality.

My opinion; worth price charged.

I suggest you go to Computer SOS and tell them the problem. New nice people who will sell you the bits you need at a reasonable price.

Boosting a weak signal will give you a strong but low quality signal, you need to plug a repeater into the main router, so yes I also recommend SOS or Paphos computers for advice.
My worst nightmare. To own a car which is "FULLY LOADED"

Hi have you thought of using this gadget you plug your Ethernet cable into the adapter and into a 13amp socket the plug the other adapter into a 13amp socket anywhere in the house and you have wifi anywhere. I use these in Cyprus and uk works perfectly.

I use a TP-Link signal booster upstairs as one of the bedrooms is a bit out of the way for the Wireless Router and it works fine. I also use TP-Link Plug In Wi Fi (you can also plug in Ethernet Cables to them) around the house (we have three) and they work fine for all the mobiles, tablets and laptops, we have these auto switching so as we move from room to room they switch to the strongest WiFi signal.
