Never had this request from Amazon and we have 2 kindles, sounds very suspicious, sure they would never send out an email like that. I would just delete it.

Logon directly to your Amazon account - not through any email link and you can check if there are updates for your Kindle.

That sounds extremely suspicious to me. I have 4 kindles and have had no such message. I would ignore it.

This is genuine and related to the original black and white Kindle e reader 3.4.2 that has a keyboard to enter your password. This device unlike newer kindles does not have automatic updates and you need to manually do so. This is the 1st update I have had to mine since purchased in 2010.

Amazon's E mail says it may take several hours mine was done in about 2 minutes.

Cheers

I wondered if it was because the kindle was purchased at amazon.com it's a paperwhite
bought about a couple of years ago the e-mail looks pretty realistic

Have had this email also and our kindles were purchased from UK.
When I updated my husbands nothing happened, just said no updates needed. It is one of the newer ones.
Mine needs doing as it is the older version with a keyboard.

I took the email to be genuine and will do it shortly.

Ours are both the keyboard type but the last update took mine to the current version 3.4.2 and that was quite some time ago...

I hunted around under the Amazon Help and came across this:

The latest software version for Kindle Keyboard is 3.4.2. This update automatically downloads and installs on your Kindle Keyboard when connected wirelessly; however, you can also manually download the software and transfer the update to your device via USB cable.

on this occasion it may be genuine, but nowadays there are so many scams it is good to be cautious.
