Contactless bank cards!

Postby Pickles » 15 Jun 2016 20:18

Is anyone else a little concerned about the arrival of contactless bank cards?
M&S Foodhall has one and I was unaware until I went to pay and the assistant just waved the card near the reader and gave me the receipt!
Surely the fact you no longer have to enter a PIN is an invitation to thieves who steal your card as they can use it immediately without having to know the PIN?

We've had our Cypriot ones for quite a while but never used them in Cyprus because we generally spent more than the amount you could use for contactless payments....

However, we do have them here in UK and as the cardholder - it's us who either put the card into the reader to make the payment personally, or tell the cashier you're using the contactless method and "we" wave the card over the reader.

You do have to be very close to the reader for the payment to be taken so don't have any worries that your card could be used if you're standing at another counter and be unaware of a payment being deducted for somebody else's purchases....

I would tell the cashier though, that you will wave the card - and not them!

If you have Cypriot bank text alerts set up on your mobile you will receive the text almost immediately the payment is confirmed by the reader. Our deductions were always notified to our phones in Cyprus before we had even put the card back in our purse or wallet :)

I have a HSBC one and was using it in London on the London Transport System which I found very handy. I also used it in the likes of Asda where I found there is a very low limit and you have to revert to PIN number if you spend over a certain amount; all in all I found it very usable.

I forgot to mention that for our UK cards there's a limited number of times you can use the contactless system per day. After that you have to use your pin. I guess there will be something similar in Cyprus too.

Agreed. Of even more concern is the introduction of using your mobile in a similar fashion. That won't be open to any form of abuse will it????????????? :))

I agree that using a contactless card when entering and leaving a tube station is a godsend.

All other transactions, at the moment I'm still inclined to use my pin.

Then again.....
Don't panic: no-one is scanning your contactless card through your pocket

And this:

And from "Which"
Q Can I be defrauded if I have a contactless card?
A
Contactless technology, which allows you to make payments by tapping your card on a reader, has been the source of a number of security concerns in recent years. For now, however, contactless fraud is rare – although, as payment technology develops, potential fraud in this area is being closely monitored. If you have concerns, speak to your bank.
