Today we were on a high...

Postby juliesewell » 31 May 2015 18:40

Around 1,850m high to be more precise....

For the first time in our 11 years living in Cyprus we decided to have a bash at one of the Troodos mountain walking trails. Given the fact we may never do another one, yours truly decided we had to do the highest of them all - just to live the adventure.

We had some fun going in and out of the clouds as we made our way around the 7km trail and had a very good time indeed. Only problem is that now we will need to do it again when the weather is a little kinder.... however, there were no bugs flying around :)

Hi Jules,

Do you have any info where the walk starts from please and how to get there?

Jules

Why do most of your posts include photographs with your Company name on them?

Just a thought.

I think the 'Name on them' will be a watermark protection to discourage other unscrupulous people posting them elsewhere as though they had taken them themselves.

People do this, it has happened to me on a Cypriot website.

Hi Keith,
It's very easy to find.... drive into Troodos Square and as you exit out the other side past the post office, you turn left at the T-junction. This is the road towards Prodromos.

Continue up the road, past the Jubilee Hotel (on your left) - then you take the left turn F953 which will take you towards Mount Olympus and the Cyprus Ski Club. After about 300m you will see a car parking area on your left side and it's signed for the Artemis Trail.

Note: don't take the wider trail to the left side of the parking area - the trail is to the right hand edge of the parking (there's also a bench there if I recall), which marks the start of the trail. The end of the trail is directly across the road from the parking area so it is a complete circular route. The last part of the leg is a short uphill walk from the ski cafe at the North Face behind Dias Restaurant.

The route is marked with poles and a triangular cut out as you wander along plus there are markers every km distance and lots of benches to stop and take in the views (and some water)! No places to pee though and not much shrubbery to hide behind ;) (tree trunks only make good hiding places for men).

It's not my "Company" name at all - it's the watermark I use and also my flickr username. I share my photos on facebook and that's mostly why I keep the watermarks on there.

Whenever we do this walk we do it "back to front" as it is easier and gives better views.

We discussed that option too. But as it was our first time and after we had done it, we realised the directional markers would have been pointing the wrong way.

So probably not a good idea for someone who hasn't traversed the route before...

Some details in the link below - it is a wonderful walk, especially in summer when it is very hot down at the coast. But we also did it in deep snow in December once (see pics, 30 Dec 2013).

http://www.moa.gov.cy/moa/fd/fd.nsf/All ... 0Trail.pdf

You can see in the PDF that the trail follows a contour line and hence it is not particularly strenuous. There is a similar walk following a contour some 200m lower down the Troodos which of course make that circular walk quite a bit longer.

As we were unsure after looking at a few maps of the trail on Google which indicated the route petered out in places, I downloaded a free App from the Windows Store for my Nokia Lumia phone called: GPS Satellite.

I wasn't too sure if I switched it off afterwards I would lose the route, which I wanted to share later on so I kept it running and it tracked us back down to Troodos Square and into the Fereos Restaurant where we usually go for a very large kebab!

That's the straight line you see after the circular route.
