car hire in u.k

Postby debs21 » 19 Nov 2016 12:02

Trying to hire car for when we go back to the uk for a week but all asking for payment by credit card which we don't have. Not had this problem in the past. Some suggesting insurance needed to use a debit card. Can anyone help?

It's a real pain Debs - everyone I tried wanted a credit card so when we go back permanently early next year I am having to keep my Bank account open here just so I can use the credit card I have!!

Debs. Phone the branch up that you want to use. Our preferred firm (Enterprise UK) say Credit Card, but will in fact accept a Debit Card. This is at Manchester.

Now that is interesting Trev because I also wish to use Enterprise who I used last time. I actually did ring them and I think it goes to a central call place but they were very helpful indeed because I am buying a car over in the UK so did not know exactly how long I would require the hire car for. She told me to book it through this call centre rather than on line and they can just mark it as necessary - this would be from Northumberland though not Manchester and I have to say never thought to ask them re credit card !!

A few years ago we pre-booked a hire car through Expedia using our Debit card with Enterprise at Manchester. They wouldn't let us take a car without a credit card number, we tried the other hire companies in the building where they where base and had the same issue, we did get our money back from Expedia though.

Thankyou all for your replies. I contacted 'Indigo' via their online chatbox on the bottom right of the screen as used them a couple of years ago. Although when we tried to book through them online this time the issue of credit card etc came up . BUT when I discussed this with the online rep they said it was perfectly possible to use a debit card with them. No need for utility bills etc that others were asking for and so on. Really ,really helpful, got a call back within minutes from another employee and car all booked now, B-)
