Overplay VPN DD-WRT on RT-N16

Postby enigmatic » 05 May 2013 07:14

I have RT-N16 modem with Overplay VPN configured on it.

It worked well, and I set it to reboot each day to clear the memory. It is powered through a UPS.

All of a sudden the VPN stopped working. Inside DD_WRT the MyPage.asp stoped working.

Overplay have been very helpful and supportive (highly recommended). They think this is an architecture failure or a 'out of memory' problem. As a result I configured a spare RT-N16 with the same config, and exactly the same problem occurred. It seems a strange both architecture failures should occur at the same time - more likely a software problem, but I have not updated or patched the software.

Has anyone else had this problem, your thoughts appreciated.

Many thanks.

I am not familiar with that model router however I do use ddwrt routers, and flash routers for friends who want that ability. I have been with Overplay since last August. For my purposes I found that using the VPN service through mypage whilst giving you the option to select the server with the best download speeds at times was frustratingly slow. Eventually I just decided to go with the smartdns service instead as I had no real need for full vpn. Mypage could be fickle and getting the service to auto restart after any down time, or amending servers took some time to stabilise. Of late I have restricted myself to the Smart DNS service with great results on Mac, Iphones, iPad, ATv, Raspberry pi, laptop and as soon as DHL deliver it a Jynxbox. The various UK iPlayers and Skygo work almost seamlessly in my area with no buffering on an 8mb WISP setup.
Out of interest are you using the standard 223.xx.xxx.xxx dns servers address they supply or have you had access to the 176 and 178 set? At some point 176 and 178 "series" appeared I saved them and use them now in preference but my account still shows the 223 series. Since then I have never found them on their site nor my account but they work seamlessly.

Suppose simple answer is something that works all the time, which up until now it did.

I think Overplay DDNS is excellent, don't like bit about logging in to confirm new IP address, but I understand why. There is the odd site which does not accept DDNS.

DDNS without the VPN overload works exceedingly well, no buffering.

Whilst trying to resolve this problem with the router I have been supported well by Overplay support staff and I am very impressed. They have given me scripts to run etc.

One of there suggestions is to install Tomato which I will try just for the hell of it.

Have always used 223.xx.xxx.xxx dns servers never had another option. Been with Overplay since July 2012 and always been happy with them. Pay 12 months at a time and find the pricing fair.

I had a look at the Wiki entries for this router and cut and paste this in case its of use.
Current Known Issues and Bugs

UPNP is currently not working for the RT-N16, so for now leave the feature disabled unless you want a full CPU Load. FIXED with SVN trac Changeset #13527
Access Restriction with MAC-Filter doesn't work on Asus RT-N16. FIXED trac Ticket #1319 (as of 12/18/09)
On this router the reset button will only bring you to recovery mode. If you wish to restore defaults, use the Red WPS button while plugging power in. Post By Eko
Rflow data reports only on upload traffic (Trac #1139). Further discussed in this thread (this issue only affects people actively using/enabling Rflow).
This device only has 32K of NVRAM and using traff (Traffic graph in Status_Internet.asp) or UPnP will cause the NVRAM to fill up quickly. Once full, router functions like ddns will stop functioning and upon the next reboot the router will reset it self to firmware defaults. Disable traff and/or UPnP to prevent this or flush the traff stats occasionally.
Note on traff: Status -> WAN -> (at the buttom) Data Administration -> button "Delete" flushes the traff stats. Services -> Services -> WAN Traffic Counter -> ttraff Daemon: Disable -> Apply settings, will stop the collection of traff data. You may however just choose to reset/delete traff data every month, and the traff data will not take much room in the NVRAM
Note on UPnP: Access to UPnP settings: NAT/QoS -> UPnP. In newer builds (Spring 2012) UPnP is disabled by default.
Note on 32k NVRAM. Tornado is working on a solution to change this setting to a 60/64k NVRAM setting (June 2012). See techinfodepot.info or contact [email protected] to help out.
Note on monitoring NVRAM usage. In newer builds (spring 2012) NVRAM usage/max is displayed on the front Web GUI at "Space Usage"
USB HDs after Build 15407: "The devs of dd-wrt have removed the loading of file system drivers from the startup of the firmware. They are now loaded on demand with automount. Well, this presents a problem for those of us with USB HDD that automount doesn't detect. In order to load the file system drivers at startup you need to add the following to save startup in the commands tab" for more, see techinfodepot, Asus_RT-N16, DD-WRT Notes
